90/20/8?

Don't worry, I'll explain the numbers in just a moment.

As a trainer or training designer, you offer workshops for learners to be part of.  You put a lot of effort into the planning, the materials, the delivery of the workshop only for learners to leave with less than 80% of what you offered.  Even worse, by the next day, they've forgotten most of the 20% they left with.  This means there's little chance of the ideas being implemented into the workplace.  A waste of your time and not a great Return On Investment for the organisation.

So what's the numbers at the top of the page?

Well, it's thought that:

With every 90 minutes of presentation, learners will give 20 minutes of their attention (which I actually think is little on the high side), with 8 minutes worth of retention.  Well, no wonder learners leave with little to show for their time.

"I loved the session. It was phenomenal, enjoyable and practical (I felt like that, even though it was like 23:00 pm in Delhi, so believe me, that's a great compliment ;-)

For me, it has been an example of how to 'walk the talk' and practice what one preaches in training: how to be truly learned centred. I liked a lot even the way you found of involving some physical movement with the 'look through your hand' exercise. Thanks also for sharing some of the resources you use in your learning activities, this is very helpful."

Carlos Villanueva - Global Training & Development

So what can you do to reverse this and give say 8 minutes of content and have the equivalent of 90 minutes of learning?  You employ 9 key elements to help make learning stick.

Expect to take home

The nine key elements to making learning stick and at least 2 ideas for each of the elements, PLUS a great technique you can use to teach a process or related elements of content such as the 8 stages of great customer service.

These ideas are almost guaranteed to make learning stick.

  • 2 New ways to introduce learners to content even before they arrive for their workshop.

  • 2 New techniques for opening your next workshop

  • 2 New ideas for closing your next workshop
