Concept Before Keyboard
How to Turn Systems Training Into a Learner Centred, Interactive Learning Experience

Learners - "Oh no, not systems training, it's so boring!.  All we do is watch the trainer and then press the keys they tell us - and it's never the same when we get back to the office."

Trainer - "I hate it when I have systems training to run, it's so boring and they never remember it anyway."

Why does this happen, well we seem to invest a lot of time and energy into 'soft-skills' training for trainers, but forget about the skills needed when teaching systems.  Instead we default back to 'show and tell' style training or we simply don't know of another way to teach systems other than through demonstration and walk-throughs.

Wouldn't it be great to if we heard:

Learner - "Wow, that was a great course.  I really enjoyed it and I'm ready to start using this system.  I wonder if they do other systems training?"

Trainer - "I cannot wait.  Systems training today.  It's always so  much fun and my learners really get it.  I know when they get back to the workplace, they'll be able to do everything they need to do with the system."

Well we can, when we stop thinking about screen shots and walk-throughs and start thinking about making sure that learners get the concept (big picture) of what the system is doing eg the 'open a new account' or 'process an insurance claim' before we ever give them the 'tool' to do the job ie the system.  After all, the system is just a means of making the job easier - it's not the job itself.

CBKIdeas and techniques that ensure learners get the whole picture (concept) before they uncover the tool (PC/Keyboard) for themselves.
